A postdoc candidate visited our group, gave a talk, had lunch with us and toured the lab.
At the end of the day, my PI asked for my opinion.
"He is as good as postdoc A, not good as B and might be better than C." I said.
"I agree, but I predict that he will be more productive than A."
All a sudden I realize productivity not only depends on how "good" you are scientifically (i.e., depth of understanding on literature, technical skills, experience), but also on your ambition and personality.
The book "A PhD is not enough" explains all.
